Illy's iperEspresso system is its own thing — a two-stage extraction (emulsion, then infusion) designed to build crema differently than Nespresso's pressure-only approach. The Y3.3 is the entry point: 19-bar pump, espresso and lungo modes, no milk system. In the cup, you get a recognizably Illy shot — round, mellow, blended — with a thicker, longer-lived crema than most capsule machines produce. The catch is the capsule lineup. Illy's closed system means you're committed to Illy's blends, which are excellent if that's what you like and a hard pass if you wanted single origins or third-wave roasters.

What we liked and didn't

Pros

  • Distinctive crema from the iperEspresso brewing system
  • Compact, attractive on the counter
  • Illy's blends are genuinely good

Cons

  • Locked into Illy's closed-capsule lineup
  • No milk frother in the box
